Coronary Bypass Video Series: Day 2
Keyhole Heart Surgery: A Viable Option for Multi-Vessel Coronary Artery Disease?
While open heart surgery is often recommended for multi-vessel disease, keyhole approaches can be viable alternatives in certain cases.
At the Keyhole Heart Clinic, we carefully assess each patient’s suitability for this less invasive technique. Here’s what we consider:
- Location of blockages: Single blocks in the left anterior descending artery (LAD) are ideal for keyhole surgery.
- Patient physique and artery condition
- Heart function
- Aortic health (assessed via CT scan)
In some cases, we can perform multi-vessel bypass grafts using a heart-lung machine with micro-pipes placed in the groin[6]. When this isn’t possible, we may recommend hybrid revascularization – combining keyhole surgery for the LAD with stent placement for other arteries.
Remember, keyhole surgery offers benefits like faster recovery, less pain, and minimal scarring compared to traditional open surgery[4]. However, each case is unique, and what’s best for you depends on your specific condition.
If you’re interested in exploring keyhole options, I encourage you to reach out to us or discuss this with your doctor. We’re here to provide you with the most advanced, patient-friendly cardiac care options available.
