Life After Keyhole: What to Expect in the Weeks and Months Following Surgery

Undergoing keyhole heart surgery is a big step toward better health and the great news is, recovery is usually smoother and quicker than with traditional open-heart surgery. While everyone’s journey is unique, this guide offers a general overview of what to expect in the weeks and months after your minimally invasive procedure at our clinic in London.
🛌 The First Few Days: Rest & Gradual Mobilisation
Right after surgery, your focus will be on rest and healing. You’ll spend a few days in the hospital where our caring team will monitor your progress and manage any discomfort.
- Pain Management: You’ll receive medication to stay comfortable. Don’t hesitate to tell the nurses if you’re in pain, they’re here to help!
- Early Mobilisation: Gentle movement is encouraged early on. Expect to sit up, walk a bit, and slowly increase activity to avoid complications like clots or pneumonia.
- Wound Care: Your tiny incisions will be dressed and monitored for infection. Keep them clean and dry!
- Monitoring: We’ll keep an eye on your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing. Temporary drains may be used to remove fluid and will be taken out before you head home.
📅 Weeks 1-4: Gradual Recovery at Home
Once discharged, healing continues at home. Be gentle with yourself—progress, not perfection!
- Rest & Sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours a night, and take naps if needed.
- Pain Management: Discomfort around incisions is normal. Use pain meds as prescribed, gradually reducing.
- Activity: Light walks and movement help build stamina. Avoid heavy lifting or anything that stresses your chest for 4 weeks.
- Wound Care: Keep incisions dry and clean. Watch for signs of infection (redness, swelling, warmth, discharge).
- Diet & Hydration: Eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water.
- Emotional Wellbeing: Feeling tired, frustrated, or a bit anxious? That’s normal. Talk to loved ones or our team if you need support.
💪 Months 2–6: Rebuilding Strength & Resuming Life
As time goes on, your energy will grow and your routine will slowly return to normal.
- Increased Activity: You’ll be able to walk farther, do light housework, and ease into moderate exercise, follow your rehab team’s advice!
- Cardiac Rehab: These programs include guided workouts, education, and emotional support. Highly recommended!
- Returning to Work: Most people are back to work within 4–6 weeks, depending on job type. Check with your doctor.
- Driving: Usually safe to drive again after a few weeks, once you’re off strong pain meds and feel confident.
- Follow-Ups: Regular check-ins with your cardiologist ensure you’re healing properly. Bring questions with you!
🌟 Long-Term Wellbeing
Even once you’re fully recovered, keeping your heart healthy is key for the long haul:
- Stick to a heart-healthy diet
- Stay active as your doctor recommends

- Keep up with regular check-ups
Keyhole surgery is a remarkable path toward better health with less pain and a faster return to life. Remember, your recovery is personal; be patient, follow your care team’s advice, and trust the process.
