There are certain risk factors for cardiovascular disease that you can do little about. For example, whether you are a man or a woman, or whether you have a history of heart disease in your family are specific risks that you cannot alter.

Nevertheless, there are still many things you can do to change your risk of developing heart disease. Making small but positive changes to your diet and lifestyle really can make a big difference to what are known as ‘modifiable risk factors’. Eating well can help you to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight, reduce high blood pressure, and improve your cholesterol and blood sugar levels, all of which help to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Eating well does not necessarily mean excluding all of your favourite foods, and it certainly does not mean living on salads! Eating well simply means nourishing your body with the correct balance of nutrients it needs for optimal health.

Rebalancing your diet to include healthy fats, good carbohydrates, sufficient protein, and plenty of vitamins and minerals will not only help to reduce your risk of heart disease, but will also make you feel significantly better too!
